When to start weighing?

I have surgery Monday, Lap RNY. The nurse told me they would put about 15lbs of water in me so not to freak when I weighed more leaving the hospital than I did entering. She said I would just "pee" the water out.

So when will all the water weight be gone? When can I tell how much I truley weight?

I know this is a stupid question, I mean a few days shouldn't matter....but, I know ME and I'll be on that scale asap......

I think each person is different and each doc does the surgery different.  I lost a lb a day on the 2 week pre-op liquid diet.   I also lost a lb a day for 11 days after the surgery.  I have heard of ppl gaining wt and then losing it a week to 10 days after the surgery.   We are all different and our bodies react differently.   I would suggest not weighing yourself for a few weeks after surgery but I know I couldn't do that either and would be on daily.

Good luck with your surgery and God Bless you,

Pam

I had lap RNY in July of '07 and I came home weighing more than when I went in too.  It shouldn't take more than a few days to lose the water weight.  I know that 12 days after surgery I was down 12 lbs from my surgery day weight which of course was less than what I weighed the day I came home from the hospital.  So don't worry about it ~ those extra pounds will be gone before you know it!!   By the way, I am one who weighs every day.  Most people will say that you shouldn't do this but it helps me to stay on track with my eating somewhat and I don't get discouraged if my weight stays the same or even goes up a pound or two.  I just adjust my eating and drinking and the scale will start moving again.  Good luck to you on Monday and keep us posted!!!

Honestly, I wouldn't weigh for at least 2-3 weeks after surgery.... I mean I did, and I don't really care that I gained 25 pounds...'cause I know it'll come off soon, but why torture yourself?  You will be plummetting down that scale very soon!  Good luck!

Charrece,

We are all so different. I didn't gain when I had my surgery and I steadily lost for the first 10 days, then I didn't lose a lb for the next ten days. It's hard to know exactly how it will work. It was hard for me to stay off the scales even though my head knew it would just come off in it's own time and of course it did, but I have to tell you that I nearly drove myself crazy stepping off and on the scale. You'll have to do what works for you and it may take a bit to figure out just what that is.

Wishing you a safe, uncomplicated surgery and a smooth, gentle recovery.
